After an update from Head Office there was an interesting talk from Saul Walker on his trip to Australia when a student at Kew to study epiphytic orchids. He has a very engaging chuckle and he explained how he thought his carefully planned trip would be off after the area was hit by a huge hurricane. In fact the damage helped open up areas and put the orchids under stress by exposing them to UV light, the result was a lot of flowers. After lunch we walked around the garden which has some superb old rhododendron, magnolias, and camellias. One huge magnolia was just starting to burst its buds and is obviously going to be an amazing sight.
